What’s on in Amsterdam? August, week #2

Amsterdam 9th - 11th August

If you haven’t noticed yet, not only the weather and the people are crazy in Amsterdam, but so are the activities you can join this upcoming weekend. This august you can join the circus (without running away), be a hippie or party with complete strangers. Read on to find what’s on in Amsterdam this weekend!

Circusbende op de NDSM

  • Friday - Sunday
  • Free!
  • Noord

We’ve all had enough of the traditional circus with old tricks and chained up animals. The circus gang at NDSM is a modern take on the much-loved institution. They focus on new circus art forms from across the spectrum of genres: from music and dance to mime, theatre and acrobatics.

The event includes three outdoor stages, a circus tent and at least ten different circus companies and music.

The entrance of the festival site is free. Some shows are accessible on donation, others have ticket sale beforehand and on the festival site. You can check the website for more info.

Spelletjesavond in NEMO

  • Friday 18:00
  • Free!
  • Centrum

How about a classic game night to kick of your weekend? To give your game night an amazing location we can suggest to check out the Nemo Museum on Friday, August 9th. You can come and play games on the roof of NEMO from 6 pm onwards.  There are lots of games provided by the organiser, such as Werewolves, Patrimonia and Set, but feel free to bring your old favourites to share the fun with other people. This event is free and you do not need to register in advance. Food from the restaurant is available until 19:00 and the Bar is open until 20:45, offering drinks and bites – including pizza ;).

Parade Amsterdam

  • Friday 9th - Sunday 25th
  • 8.50
  • Zuid

Starting this weekend there will be 80 theatre, dance and music performances in the tents on across the Martin Luther Kingpark in Amsterdam. Most of the shows are specially made for the festival and can only be seen this summer, so be sure not to miss it!

The shows are different every day and only last about 30 minutes each, making it easy – for the indecisive ones among us – to watch multiple shows in one day.

In addition to the evening shows, there is an extensive KinderParade in the afternoon with drama, music, and workshops. Two live bands play every evening, in Hotel Vilé and Katrina, which you can visit for free.

Moderne Hippie Markt

  • Sunday 12:00 - 18:00
  • 2.50
  • Oost

Between the beautiful gardens of the Tropencafe in the Oosterpark you will be able to find everything  you can think of when you hear “fair, sustainable, vintage, retro & hippie”. Join us as of 12:00 to walk around barefoot or for a guided meditation at 14:00.

Hang Together - Huis van Iemand Anders

  • Saturday
  • De Pijp

Warning: If you like exclusive VIP parties or think you are better than everyone else this event might not be for you, otherwise, please keep reading.

To fully appreciate the vibe, you are requested to ‘invite the most random people that you can imagine to party with: your Uber driver, your yoga instructor, your uncle’s ex-wife and that weird guy you met in the smoking area’. This promises to be a motley collection of waifs and strays, urban freewheelers and couch potatoes, people from all places and all walks of life. If this sounds like your cup of tea (or tumbler of vodka) and you prefer to expect the unexpected, then head on down to the Pijp this Saturday and see what happens.
