Amsterdam, January 31st - February 2nd
This weekend we have to say two very special goodbyes. One, which all but the most misanthropic will be delighted by, is January. Simultaneously dry and wet in precisely the wrong ways, no one likes January in Amsterdam. The other, which will no doubt divide opinion, friends, and the continent itself, is Britain. With that in mind, there’s nothing for it but to get out there and celebrate and commiserate in every way we can. Find out what’s on in Amsterdam this weekend to add colour to your plans.
Brexit is finally upon us (sort of). That means it’s time for a brexit party. One that has nothing at all to do with Nigel Farage. NDSM Fuse are hosting a lovely send off to our neighbours across the puddle.
There’s going to be British music, art, poetry, and photography. The drinks will be suitably strong. There’s even a boxing match between Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen. You’re invited to share your memories and reflections and artistic creations in advance for them to be broadcast on the screen like it’s a humanist funeral.
Come laugh, come cry, come drink.
NDSM Expo Opening
This is literally in the same building as the Brexit party so why not combine the two? The expo openings always draw a friendly crowd, and there’s free food and drinks especially for the early-comers.
Innovative art in one of Amsterdam’s most spectacular and least pretentious exhibition spaces. A perfect cultural counterpart to the messy piss-up you’ll face in the bye bye Britain celebrations.
Killacutz Records reopening party
Okay, so it’s not the most mainstream way to spend your Saturday afternoon. But then, were we to spend every weekend doing mainstream things we’d lead exceptionally uneventful lives. Running every Saturday, Circus Lab is a great place to practice your skills – be they acrobatic, pyrotechnic, or frantic.
More important than the ideal location is the environment here. You’ve got other people around who you can trade tips and support each other with. They have a good range of equipment to practise a variety of skills, but you’re of course welcome to bring your own too. Check out this nice little community, whatever your ability.
John Talabot & Beesmunt Soundsystem @ Garage Noord
We avoid having too many club nights on these posts, but this one’s going to be special.
John Talabot will be layering up the throbbing red walls of Garage Noord with a textured electronic soundscape, whilst Amsterdam duo, Beesmunt Soundsystem, take us on a mystical journey through the balearic world.
Not to be missed. Cosy, chill, and friendly as ever.
Rugby at the Pub
For those who don’t know, international rugby is a lovely opportunity to watch people getting beaten up on live television. Combine the rivalries between England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, and Italy, with the melting pot of those cultures in Amsterdam, and you’ve got a recipe for raucousness.
Sample it for yourself at O’Reilly’s pub.
Wales-Italy, Saturday 15:15
Ireland-Scotland, Saturday 17:45
England France, Sunday 16:00
Bathtime @ Volkshotel
The first Sunday of every month, it’s time for everybody’s bath. It’s a great chance to meet some new people and trade skin infections in the communal hot tubs. There’s also a little sauna shaped like a gypsy caravan – be prepared for things to get steamy.
As it’s the first Sunday, Volkshotel make the event extra special by inviting a mixture of DJs and live acts to serenade you on their rooftop terrace. I’d recommend you get there early as it’s no fun shivering in your speedos while others luxuriate in the hot tub.
