Amsterdam, November 1st - 3rd
As we turn the page to November the winds get bitter and the nights grow long. But there are no excuses to go into hibernation. The city has listened to your inklings of early onset SAD and brings you events that will keep you warm inside and out. Have a read of what’s on in Amsterdam in November week #1 to find out how to stay cosy and entertained!
Pikaplant houseplant sale
Criticism: ‘All Millenials want is houseplants and white walls’
Response: ‘Because we can’t afford gardens and we’re not allowed to paint our walls’
Take yourself to Pikaplant this weekend and…pick a plant. Bring yourself up to speed with the increasingly plant based trajectory of the generation and craft your personal oasis. Filled, of course, with tears in despair of not being allowed to own a dog.
Plants for as little as €3.
You’d be forgiven for thinking there’s a lot of hot air around this old gas works. But based on the explosive events they put on every first Friday of the month, you’d be hypoxic not to be gassed at heading there at the start of this weekend.
Okay, enough puns for one day.
The 10 venues around Westergas open their doors to put on special events. These range from a vintage vinyl night market to fair-trade hot chocolate, from the sounds of herfst at Radio Radio to vegan cocktails at TonTon.
Wrap up warm, follow your nose and see where the night takes you.
Eeuwige Jeugd Grand Opening
Eternal Youth! This is apparently what one of Amsterdam’s best loved breweries seem to offer with every glass of beer. Whilst they’ve got some cracking brews, experience shows that you’re more likely to end up with a headache and feelings of paranoia after a night on their beer.
That said, it’s Friday, and Eeuwige Jeugd are opening their first tap room. Best to live for the present on this one and worry about old age when it comes along. There’s DJs, Karaoke, and bar games to accompany our favourite malt drink. Come along this Friday and say proost to this great new venue in Oost.
Rescued food @ FOAM
If you are the proud owner of a Museumnacht ticket, then this will be the cherry atop your night. Not only are you surrounded by the groundbreaking work of Brassai, but you get a free dinner of rescued food. Sustainability and cultural delight rolled into one.
It’s one of the better known secrets that you can stop by Volkshotel on the first Sunday of the month to wash away the emotional grime of the weekend in a hot tub with a spectacular view across Amsterdam. Take yourself to the 8th floor with your favourite swimmers and wings, and enjoy the transition from the bitter wind to warm bubbles.
This event is free, and there are DJs and a bar to keep you occupied. Make sure you get there early because it’s not the largest terrace and space is limited.
Beer Pong Tournament
Despite the quantity of our friends from across the pond living in Amsterdam, the city is pretty thin on the ground with the national sport of frat boys. If you can throwing a ball into a cup and downing a beer a sport…
Cafe Parck and AD are hosting a beer pong tournament this Sunday. Source yourself some hair of the dog and get your hand-eye-coordination back on track. Friendly vibes all round, and you can win yourself €50 and a pitcher of beer. Plus the bar owner seems to enjoy bringing round Jager shots every so often. As if that’s what you need on Sunday afternoon…
