Amsterdam, October 11th - 13th
It seems that festival season is well and truly over. Only joking! Sexyland is hosting one on Friday. Other than that, there’s ice skating for less than a euro, gezellig jazz, and the opportunity to watch children beating each other up – to name but a few. Read on to find out more about what’s on in Amsterdam, October week #2.
Sexyland / Lowlands Reunion
Efficiency is a concept not generally applied to parties. Behold – the exception that proves the rule! Sexyland are somehow cramming three days of Lowlands magic into just one evening. They’ve expanded their intimate venue with extra tents, complete with miniature botanical fair and cheese fondue restaurant – as if it was possible to make the space any sexier.
Get cosy with second hand body heat this Friday at NDSM. Tickets here.
The Drugs Debate
Despite its generally progressive stance on drugs, the Netherlands is not immune from spates of violent drug motivated crime. Who’s to blame? Is it the ‘yoga sniffer’ who dines on crystalline refreshment by night and avocado sourdough by day? Is it the pinstriped community of Zuid, whose productivity mysteriously skyrockets following ‘toilet breaks’? Is it the guy who runs powders, pills, and tabs around houses on his moped? Or is it the very concept of prohibition the world has imported from 1950s America?
There are no simple answers to these questions, but you’ll get a fair bit closer by attending and joining the debate this Friday. Tickets here.
Right, so things might be over in Munich, but in my book it’s still October. These guys’ too, apparently. After a sun-filled garden party in June, comes the Autumnal edition with everything geared towards making you feel cosy, safe, and a little bit drunk: an essential combination to stave off the annual dose of existential dread sweeping over us like a Siberian gale. Friekens brewery are appealing to the whole community of Noord and beyond.
Parents and kids are most welcome, and there are activities geared towards all groups. Anyone who likes getting sweaty in a glorified bath and sharing verucas with strangers should have a dip in the hot tub (where you’ll find me). There’s also workshops for all ages, a camp fire, delicious harvest-related food, and of course lots and lots of tasty craft beer.
The Night of Lightning: Boxing and Boogie
Let the games begin! There will be blood, sweat, and loving delight this Saturday (and probably a few tears as well). Tension has been hotting up over the last few weeks. This night, it will come to a head in one great flash of lightening at the kick boxing club, and a big friendly boogie after.
The boys and girls will be kicking and punching each other between 17:30 and 21:00 (well worth a watch), and then the BBQ gets sparked and tensions lower (somewhat). There’s also a hot tub at this one (perhaps an even higher percentage of sweat than usual), as well as the sounds of Gallowstreet. Afterparty on till 3am at Skatecafe. Expect bruises.
20c Ice Rink Entry!
This weekend, the Jaap Eden IJsbaan reopens with their customary and generous special entry price of just 20c. You can also get a further 10% off future visits if you make it there for the opening weekend.
Whether you’re a bambi on ice or Ekaterina on skates, embrace sub-zero temperatures this weekend (because you’ll be seeing a lot more of them anyway).
Jazz in the Hearth of Amsterdam
Let the cold winds funnel down Albert Cuypstraat and get warm by the hearth. This place is guaranteed to lull you into a a foetal state with subtle and cosy jazz, lighting pitched just right, and an ample supply of good wine, beer and food. Oh, and you get to sit on swings instead, so you can sway in time with the gentle music.
Be aware, time flies there! Make sure you bring some warm clothes for when you need to pluck yourself from the womb and journey home. Tickets here.
